Dear AMPHL Friends and Family, December 2013
This year was a milestone year for AMPHL as we hosted our 6th biennial conference with record attendance. The 2013 conference was held at the beautiful and expansive campus of the Texas School for the Deaf in downtown Austin. The conference provided a unique opportunity for professional deaf education, networking, and mentoring to over two hundred students and professionals from across the country. Some people were able to attend and network for the first time!
After the conference several new board members were elected. The board is now engaged in several internal projects to improve organizational processes, work on focused goals, and meet the growing needs of its members while reaching out to even more deaf professionals and students across the country. This is a heavy workload and challenging for a volunteer-based board composed solely of working professionals or full time students and residents.
To accomplish our organizational goals, AMPHL relies heavily on our conferences and website. The website and internet-based technology allow us to reach out to people across the country (and around the world) to effectively communicate as a board and an organization with a specific niche.
As keys to our success we must always look to improve these critical tools. At this time, we are working on four key goals: 1) Updating our website while simultaneously rebranding and refocusing our mission. 2) Updating the platform to make it more interactive with more blogs and v-logs. 3) Providing conference scholarships to enable students and members with limited funds the opportunity to develop a professional network and meet mentors face to face. 4) Hiring an administrator to help with our expansive outreach plans, collaborate with other organizations, establish partnerships with educational programs, and eventually have a physical office in a high density deaf community such as in Rochester, NY or Washington D.C.
Our next biennial conference will be held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on May 15-17, 2015. Save the Date! We expect over 300 attendees. More details will follow.
We hope you will join us in our first annual campaign to raise money to help spread AMPHL’s mission, update our website, and provide conference scholarships. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to our 501(3)(c) organization for 2013. Attached is a donation form
